On the contrary, there is also shallow work. Thinking up a strategy, coding, writing new content from scratch, or designing a logo are all examples of deep work. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replace. According to Cal Newport’s Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World, everything that falls under “… professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit” can be considered deep work.
